I believe that too many people love us through the prism of that which they want of us, what they think we deserve according to their Scale of Judgement, and what we represent to them in their private thoughts. Much too many people rely on others for their own happiness. You, as an individual, are basically responsible for your own happiness, and unfortunately, too many individuals are actually incapable of honor and dignity and ultimately, love. It can be ultimately draining to feed oneself with the constant barrage of victimhood instead of taking responsibility fully for oneself.
